So you might be wondering how hard is it to learn bass guitar?
Perhaps you are trying to decide “should I learn bass or guitar?”
I guess I should let you know that I personally prefer to play bass guitar. I do own an electric guitar and can play it. I always tend to pick up and playing my bass 99.9% of the time over the guitar.
When starting out I wondered is it easier to learn bass or guitar… After trying both I stuck with bass. I think that both instruments take skill to play but that skills can be picked up by anyone who wants to learn bass or guitar badly enough.
Some people say that it’s easier to get going quickly with bass. You can learn to play simply rhythms and how to play roots note and be up and running quickly. I agree that that is one of the huge advantages to bass. Even as a total beginner you can play along to songs, jam with friends or join a band quickly. Getting good at bass though takes just as long as guitar.
With guitar you have to learn how to play chords. These can something take a while to pick up and get going with. Most guitar plays I know have gone from total beginner to playing their first song in a few hours. Some songs only have two or three chords and so learning to play them in there simplest form can be achieved quickly.
Another comment that people make when wondering if it’s easier to learn bass or guitar is that the bass has less strings (Well, a standard four string bass does). This means that some people make the assumption that it’s easier to learn bass as there are less strings, less notes and you mainly play one note at a time.
At the end of the day it’s your choice. To be honest I would try both like I did and then choose to learn bass or guitar. It’s a good idea to have one of them as your main instrument. If you try and split your time equally between them you will properly end up okay at both rather than excellent at one.
I hope this have given you some good advice if you can’t decide to learn bass or guitar.
