Looking for a Fender Bass without the high price tag? A Mexican fender bass maybe the answer…

Mexican Fender Bass vs. American Fender Bass

Fender Standard Precision Bass
Price: $449.99

Fender American Standard Precision Bass
Price: $1,099.99

Quite often when you see them for sale, the Mexican version won’t say it’s from Mexico. Fender simply adds ‘American’ to the name of the USA model. (See the example above)

To look at they look virtually identical, which is fantastic if you want the Fender look for under half the price.

Apart from obviously fact they are manufactured in two different locations. It’s important to note that they are other difference in the two instruments.

Like all things in life you get what you pay for. The American has higher quality parts and workmanship. Don’t let that put you off though. For the price the Fender Bass Mexico version is an incredible instrument for the money.

On the popular online music store MusiciansFriend.com the Fender Standard Precision Bass (Mexican) has a 4.5/5 star rating. If you take a look it has nothing but rave reviews from happy customers who love their new fender.

Here are a few quotes from the reviews page.

“I’ve been a bass player since 2001. I’ve done US tours, recorded albums, all that. I’ve also gone through a fare share of basses and when I decided I wanted something real fat and punchy, I knew I needed a Fender. The reason I didn’t go with the American Series is this simple fact- The quality of the A.S. is only 10%-15% better.”

“This is pretty much the best valued and versatile bass you’ll ever come across.”

“I bought this bass 1.5 years ago and it rocks!!”

I bought my Mexican Jazz in 2001 new and this is one of the best basses I have played and giged with. I have hot roded it with bartolini pickups, badass bridge, aguilar obp1 pre-amp and this thing runs with high end fancy basses. This bass has been trouble free and it sets up with very nice low action. The truss rod adjusts very easily. A friend of mine has a high end Fodera and he told me that this mexican bass plays as well as his Fodera. I have played other mexican basses and none of those play or sound like this one does so it is hard to find one that performs well. Keep this in mind when you go to get one, play it first. As far as upgrading it, the Badass bridge should be the first thing you do. It makes a world of difference in the tone.

As you say, you get what you pay for. I was going to replace a Rickenbacker with a Fendex Precision, and after about three days of struggling with the MIM bass, I just cancelled the ebay sale of my Rick. I mean, of course it’s unfair to compare a 2,000 dollar bass with a 500 dollar one, but I’m just saying that there is a significant difference in playability between the two, and it’s hard to imagine that there isn’t also a pretty significant difference between the FenderMex and the FenderAm.
