Coming up with your own original bass lines and licks is a lot of fun and doesn’t have to be complicated. Today I’m going to share with you 3 simple ways you can get some creativity flowing so you can take it to your bass and let it loose.
Step 1 – Get inspired
Getting inspired is an important thing to do before being creative. You need that seed idea or thought. Something that can help influence what you want to try and achieve.
This can be anything; it doesn’t need to be directly related to music. Hearing a piece of great music can be inspiring but you can also get your inspiration from thing like nature. Perhaps the sounds of a train racing down the railroad track. Many songs have been written and inspired by everyday noises and happenings.
Step 2 – Experiment
Another way to start creating bass lines is to simply play around with notes. Many songs and piece of music have been “happy accident” where someone just randomly played something that sounded good.
So just pick up your bass guitar and get busy!
Step 3 – Refine
Once you have some ideas and have played about for a while, the next phase is bringing it all together into an organised bass line or lick.
This can sometimes be done the same day but I find it that if I sleep on it. Play it for a few minutes each day and you will find it twill develop and refine into something you think sounds good.
I hope this has helped you to understand the process I use. I highly encourage you to starting putting it to work for you. The most important thing is to just have fun and enjoy the process.
